Healing For Richter & Family

Richter let me know that his world was turned, “upside down,” after being separated from his adopted canine companion, August.

Richter, a 9-year-old terrier mix, and August, a 7-year-old German Shepherd mix, had lived together for 6 years; both having been rescued from a nearby shelter. This September, their human parents, Diane and Bill, ended their relationship and due to some logistical reasons, they determined it would be best for Richter to remain with Diane, and for August to live with Bill.

Trouble for Richter began even prior to the separation but Diane and Bill were pre-occupied with moving and the general chaos they were experiencing. They neglected to address what, in retrospect, were signs that Richter was developing increasing issues related to the situation at hand. Richter reverted back to some earlier behaviors, even one day tearing up a couch cushion.

But once the move occurred that's when things became even more serious.

Richter’s consumption of food dwindled and he lost 10lbs in a little over a month after Bill and August moved out. Richter's veterinarian determined no physical issues, but suggested that Richter was suffering from depression and anxiety related to the major changes in Richter's life. Bill was telling a friend, who happened to have been a client of mine, about Richter. He was, "skeptical," when the friend suggested bringing me in to help. Diane and Bill discussed what to do and finally, when Richter’s barking resulted in a complaint from Diane’s apartment building neighbor, Diane scheduled a session with me.

Diane and Bill were both present for our session and expressed to me that they were extremely worried. Richter and August were like children to them and they just wanted them to be ok.

My goal is always to feel what an animal is feeling when I am communicating with them. I could feel immense sadness from Richter about being apart from August.Richter showed me his early years. It was clear that he had several moves, from family to family, prior to ending up in a shelter. The family of Diane, Bill and August, splitting apart, was made even worse by what Richter had experienced when he was younger. Richter thought that he would never have to go through this kind of loss again. Although he also missed Richter, August was handling the changes better. August also had access to other dogs to play with, as Bill was staying with family who had two dogs for August.

Richter expressed to me that he felt "everything," from the people in his life and was privy to all of the emotion that his humans experienced. A constant theme in my work with animals is that they, "take on," the emotional and physical issues of the humans they love. As a result, our work together included developing a plan, informed directly by Richter, about what he needed most at this time to feel stability in his life again (including making visits with August more of a priority).

We also incorporated energy work and holistic solutions for Richter, as well as Diane and Bill, to support both of them during this season of change with flare-ups of stress and “dis-ease.”

I received an email from Diane that things had improved almost immediately after our first session. "Richter is much calmer and I feel that your work with him made a huge difference in his anxiety. He is eating again and the barking is almost non-existent. Bill and I can't thank you enough. Working with you has actually also helped in the healing process for me and Bill, as well.”
