Sharing A Special Family Story - Dog As Protector

When my grandmother was a baby her father died after contracting rabies from a skunk bite.

My grandmother's mother (Molly) could have stayed at her father-in-law's home. However, he did not believe in the education of females and Molly did. So Molly decided to move her 2 daughters (including my grandmother and namesake) and one son from one part of Oklahoma to another to work picking cotton.  A now (twice) widowed women with three small children traveled in a covered wagon over difficult and dangerous terrain to a plantation field in a foreign place. Molly new there she could raise her children with her values and earn at least a minimal income.

The arrangement included shelter and the owner of the cotton field gave Molly and her children a structure to live in. However, the "house" had only an open space instead of a front door. The family was rather nervous about what might come through that opening but Molly kept reassuring the children that, "God would provide." To make matters worse, the family dog who had traveled long with them on this new adventure was fatally struck by another wagon the night before they arrived. The first night they were there a border collie mysteriously appeared and laid across that open doorway. The whole family was able to sleep that night without fear as the dog remained there the entire night. Amazingly, the dog returned to guard his post, night after night.

After awhile they saw the border collie with the owner of the cotton field. Realizing he was the owner's they told him what the dog had been doing. The owner said that he had been wondering where the dog had been going every night! God did provide - in the form of not only one, but two furry protectors. Oh, and the owner of the cotton field did eventually give them a door.

Have you ever just known that an animal was protecting or helping you in some way? You knew that it was so and yearned to be able to fully connect with them and hear the whole story, straight from the animal.
