Hunter, killer, furball: all of these terms could be used to describe our feline friends and yet, we are startled when reminded of their primal instincts or "dark sides".
I sometimes observe my cat, TirNa, stalking birds when I allow her outside in the morning. I know she would be very excited to catch one (unlikely due to her age and short legs). In fact, she once killed a mouse when I was living elsewhere. Curiosity compelled me to ask TirNa what her feelings were about this side of herself.
TirNa stealthily stalking her prey
I can feel my own heart race as my cat, completely in the moment, tracks her prey with speed and precision. It is fascinating! Previously feral, TirNa is no stranger to the hunt, so when I ask her how she feels about catching her prey, the answer is not surprising- TirNa explains, "When I have killed, I feel uplifted, sort of high."
Then, I wonder how the Birds are feeling about this "circle of life"...?
They simply explain that they are very family oriented and demonstrate that by flying in a circle formation. Then, I inquire, "How do you feel when a cat or another animal "gets" one of you?" They express that they become "heart sick" and fly in a circular fashion around their fallen loved one.
Oddly, the birds do not harbor any actual resentment toward the animal that took one of their loved ones. Rather, they express the understanding that, "they are just doing what they do."
While we live with animals and the many facets to their personalities and natures, we must strive to be completely accepting of them. It's amazing how the birds accept that their predators are doing what they do. The fact that they don't get angry or take it personally is a great lesson for us humans. Of course, this is unimaginable for us to accept another harming our loved one and chalk it up to human nature. However, it does smack of a certain acceptance of others that is often elusive to us as fellow humans sharing the same planet. We can even accept that bears might kill us if we get too close and take responsibility for building on their territory. So, why is accepting differences among fellow humans so difficult for us? This question presents an opportunity where we need to seek the wisdom of our animal friends who behave as nature intended.
