Shark Perspectives On Humans

I was recently snorkeling in the ocean in Florida when a friend and I encountered a baby nurse shark and her mother. Although nurse sharks are typically not aggressive I clearly heard this baby nurse shark, as well as her mother who was resting nearby, sending the message to stay away. There was definitely a feeling of fear about us humans.

Animal communication involves the cultivation of inter-species understanding. These nurse sharks appeared very relaxed and laid back. However, what was being displayed externally was not what was happening internally for them.

I kept my distance but told this mother and baby that we were not there to hurt them. I was rather surprised at how quickly they responded saying, that it was OK for us to stay. It felt clear to me that they very much loved their current environment and they were extremely comfortable.

The nurse sharks asked why we were there? I attempted to explain that my friend and I were there to see things under the ocean and showed them us above the ocean walking on solid ground. They already had some sense of this being where the other humans they have seen come from and conveyed a feeling that this seemed strange.

I asked the sharks had any final messages for humans? They mentioned that they do feel that there is pollution where they live. They showed water that was not pure and an image of the ocean water being affected by something being dropped into it, sinking down into the water and then spreading out into the surrounding area as if to emphasize, "what you put in here does affect things more than you realize."

It still amazes me how willing animals, even in the wild, are willing to connect with humans despite the concerns that they may have based on upon previous experiences with humans. Animals communicate with an open heart and therefore have much to teach us.
