Having possessed a passion for board games since I was a young child, Clue took top rank above all the others.
When the film version of Clue was released, it was like a tiny miracle had occurred in my young life. If you haven't seen Clue (what are you waiting for?!) the various character's mysterious backgrounds are revealed in the most tantalizing ways. Professor Plum, Ms. Scarlet, Wadsworth the butler (he is only in the movie). So much fun.
I host a group of individuals in my home for discussion of faith and socialization. Recently, several new people have joined in and as the weeks progress I have had the pleasure to learn a bit more about each one of them. New relationships can be so interesting. As we watch a person's individual characteristics “unfold” we hopefully gain new appreciation, insight and understanding about them. What is especially intriguing is the unknown. Will this person exit almost as quickly as they came in? Maybe ten years later you run into each other and suddenly realize how much you actually had in common all of this time. Why did we waste all those years not knowing each other?!Then there are the people that stick around. Those whom we have the opportunity to be a part of on their journey; seeing how they navigate through life and witnessing how they may grow through the inevitable ups and downs. Only time will tell who these people are and the roles we may play in each other's lives.
There are similarities between our human connections and those of our animal family members. Over the course of the past few months, my cat Gracie has been encouraging me to return to singing, something I have put on the back burner for quite some time. Frankly, I never realized she cared. But she now runs up to me and purrs, joining in when I sing. When people become aware of my ability to communicate with animals (something I believe anyone can learn to do), they will often say, “all of a sudden our dog is doing this or that. He never acted like this before. Can you tell me why they are behaving this way?"
Boomer is a “happy” dog. Claudia is a cat who “doesn't like most people.” It is important to be careful about assigning characteristics to our animals, even if they have displayed certain qualities in the past. Animals personalities evolve and change over time. They can change preferences and feelings about a variety of things, as well develop new behaviors. Watch and listen as new aspects of their personalities are revealed and also experience the excitement of seeing how animals can play a variety of roles in our lives as time goes on.
Allowing for the possibility of new aspects of our animals' personalities, even when we think we already know exactly who they are, is vitally important. After all, do you want to “miss” anything about your beloved animal family member? Becoming aware of growth in our animals provides an opportunity to deepen our bond with them as we experience those changes along with them.
If we are open to learning about how our animal's are growing and evolving they will never cease to amaze us!
