It is not uncommon for humans to project onto animals our feelings about their challenging circumstances.
When I adopted my dog Meesha, I picked up on how hard her life had been and I tended to coddle her. This ended up not being a good thing for many reasons. Worst of all, it taught her that I was “soft” and she very quickly began to walk all over me. Meesha was a major teacher in regard to an animal's ability to persevere despite difficult circumstances and for humans to allow them to do so.
A kitten named Velcro recently reminded me of the need to keep my assumptions in check.
Velcro lost his vision during a surgery that became more complicated and extensive than expected. When he was returned to his cage at the shelter where he had been living, he was initially very anxious.
Velcro
With such a major change and nobody to explain to Velcro what had happened, I couldn't imagine what this had been like for him.
My first response was to feel sad for him. But when I spoke with Velcro about how he was doing, he explained that he was fine. He did acknowledge that at first he panicked. However, Velcro had adjusted to his lack of sight because he was able to start out small, in his cage, and to “feel out” his old environment with his new loss of vision. Velcro explained that although it took a brief time of adjustment, once he accepted the change he started to figure things out. It was all about instinctual survival and he rallied. I asked Velcro if he had any sense as to a reason for why this had happened to him? His response was that he didn't know now but he believed that it would eventually serve some higher purpose.
This is one of my favorite passages of scripture:
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters. Psalm 23:2
These words soothe my soul and remind me that sometimes I need to accept my circumstances and be still. And THEN rally!
I have found, as Velcro mentioned, that this process provides more fertile ground on which to move forward so that my difficult experience can be used for a higher purpose.
