Two
weeks ago I touched my dog's neck and the word “hypothyroid,” popped
into my mind. Knowing that she had a holistic veterinary wellness check
up the following week, it would likely be discovered if this were the
case.
After
an understandably extra-long wait at the vet office (they had a
complicated case before Cheyenne was seen), I was seriously fading after
a very long day (not to mention this darn daylight savings thing...can
we be done with this, please). During the veterinary exam her vet
touched her neck at one point and then moved on. He said that he had no
concerns stemming from the exam. I failed to mention my thyroid concern.
I actually just sort of “forgot” about the thyroid matter until he
touched her neck. But when he didn't feel anything, I just dismissed it.
I was asked if I wanted to do a comprehensive blood panel, which I
agreed to.
A few days later, I received a call back from the vet that Cheyenne's blood work was showing for hypothyroidism.
Another indicator of decreased thyroid function is increased coffee intake. Just kidding. Disclaimer: Coffee is toxic for dogs.
No harm, no foul. This time.
Not
mentioning the thyroid issue was more just plain tiredness but what if I
had declined the blood work? Maybe I would have picked up again at a
later date on a thyroid problem. But this served as a reminder to me
that it is imperative that we speak up if there is any concern about our
animals. Thankfully, I have a veterinarian who I know would take my
concerns seriously. But another “consequence” of this incident is that I
missed an opportunity. A chance to display for someone in the animal
helping community, the value of animal communication. Not to mention it
would have been good for business, potentially.
How To Talk To Your Veterinary Professional
As
a professional animal communicator, I will usually explain to a new
veterinarian about what I do, during the intake. I also normally take my
animals to holistic veterinarians which sometimes means it can be
easier to talk with them about animal communication in respect to health
concerns. However, if you don't do this professionally, it can be
intimidating to raise concerns that are based on a “feeling” or that
were brought up by a professional animal communicator. Even if you have
to “rehearse” what you want to say beforehand, it is so important that
you speak up. Even if we feel it might be seen as “silly” or dismissed.
If this happens, I would encourage you to consider getting a second
opinion if there is any unwillingness to at least consider your concerns
by your veterinarian.
Getting Clear Information
I
am not a veterinarian and do not claim to be able to diagnose or treat
any physical problems. I always encourage my clients to obtain proper
veterinary care and require this when I am being sought to assist with
matters of a physical nature. Animal communication, done by a
professional, can lend clarity and bring resolution to a myriad of
behavioral, physical and emotional issues. You may not be feeling any
particular reason for why your animal is experiencing a problem. Or, you
may not be sure how to help resolve the matter. Just as you would seek a
professional for other matters from hiring a locksmith to dog grooming,
seeking a professional animal communicator to get to the heart of your
animal's issues is a logical step to take for bringing resolution to a
multitude of issues.
