Sunday night a little after 11:00PM I
had the pleasure of welcoming a little white lab and pit mix named
“Hansel,” (who's name has since been changed to PeeDee), into my
home. My dog Cheyenne was thrilled to have a playmate delivered.
“Can he please stay?!”
Uh oh.
No, unfortunately this was not another
birthday surprise for Cheyenne. She had turned 2 (I estimated) the
day prior and she was having a weekend of steak, toys and play-dates.
Although I did tell her this puppy was only staying overnight, no wonder she thought this might turn into another present for her.
PeeDee's Journey
No, PeeDee was not staying. He was
actually nearing the end of his trip from Arkansas to Canada where he
was going to his Forever Home. PeeDee had been rescued from a kill
shelter by Faithful Friends Dog Rescue, Texarkana, AR. PeeDee was being taken to his new family by Highway Heroes Rescue Transport and had
started his journey the day prior. He had just one more
overnight and day trip before he would arrive in New Brunswick,
Canada.
After Cheyenne and PeeDee tussled a
bit, I attempted to put PeeDee to bed in his crate next to where
Cheyenne sleeps. He began to cry. I did my best to create the ideal
situation to help him with massage, energy work and lavender
diffusing in the air. To help him calm I spoke with PeeDee about how
he was feeling and about his experience on the road.

Conversation With PeeDee
PeeDee: It's a little confusing. I'm not sure
where I am going? PeeDee shows me himself in one of the cars being
transported and expresses curiosity with some moments of nervousness but not fear. “I know people
are taking care of me.”
Me: Is there anything that would help
you to feel more relaxed and to be able to sleep?
PeeDee: I'd would like to know what is
happening and how long I am going to be here?
Me: I explained to PeeDee that he was
going to be picked up in the morning by another female person and told him about how he was going to have a few more drivers the next day. I helped him to understand that there was not much left to go
and that he had a forever home family waiting for him. PeeDee
continued to describe his transport experience, thus far.
PeeDee: It's like a chain of love.
PeeDee shows me and I feel this big ball of love that starts with the
first person to rescue PeeDee in AR and then continues from that
person to the next, to the next until PeeDee arrives in his new home.
It begins to feel bigger than just the task at hand of simply getting
PeeDee to his home. I can feel the energy of all of these people
focused on this one goal and see and feel an expansive light of love. PeeDee says that he is being taken care of and protected by God.
Me:Indeed there was an ongoing string
of chat going back and forth amongst all of the drivers and
overnight-ers involved. Such positive energy surrounding this shared
experience known as “Hansel.”
It wasn't until after I completed
writing the first draft of this blog entry that I realized I had missed a
piece of this connection. It suddenly occurred to me the relevance of
the song "Meesha's Story" that I wrote about my dog Meesha's journey to
be with me. Meesha also came from the south and traveled north to
UpState NY. A story of faith, as well.
PeeDee settled in and fell asleep
quickly after our talk. My sense was he just needed to get his
bearings and to be reassured. PeeDee, in general, was already aware that he was going to be OK. It was not easy to hand off PeeDee in the
morning. This guy was a love bug and I was sad to see him go but also
loved being a part of his journey home.
Home
Me: I checked in with PeeDee to see how
he was doing with the permission of his new family for the when
writing this blog entry.
PeeDee: This is good home for me. He
shows me him sniffing the other dogs in his new home up North. Lots
of activity. It is good. I'm excited but also getting my bearings. I
will do well here. I see myself as a becoming a big dog here.
Anne: What do you think about the
people and experiences you had on your way to your new home?
PeeDee: Shows me himself in a large SUV
or truck and says he was “way up.” It feels exciting to be up so
high, almost exhilarating. I loved it! I was the baby the whole way.
Everyone treated me like one. I was very considered to be very special.
You still are Hansel now PeeDee!
In case you were concerned, Cheyenne
understood that PeeDee could not stay and has had several play-dates
this week. Rest assured so she is not suffering. We are also working on having gratitude for her cats.
