Have you ever had one of the light bulb moments where you realize
that someone you’re speaking with has something in common with you but
they do not realize it?
My dog Cheyenne is a certified pet
therapy dog. She and I were on a pet therapy visit recently and one of the
people at the location was telling me in passing about an interaction
that he had with a wild animal. He proceeded to show me pictures on his
phone of this incredible event. For confidentiality I will not go into
detail but I have to say that this was quite something. This was not the
kind of animal that a person normally can touch or have this level of
contact.
As I listened it dawned on me that this person was communicating with animals and he didn’t even realize it!
It's you, too!
People
are always asking me “how long have you been communicating with
animals, did you have to learn to do this,” and they say things like “I
wish I could do this.” They don’t realize that communication between
animals and people are happening all of the time.
Animals are so
waiting for us to acknowledge that we are communicating with them I
don’t understand how they don’t get fed up and stop. There are loving,
eager, animals all over this world saying, “hello, we are communicating,
why don’t you just acknowledge it and do it all the time!” My heart
truly goes out to the animals for this reason.
Because of
my role in the scenario I mentioned above, I could not convey all of
this to the person with whom I was interacting. However, since I can
say anything I want here (well, almost) I beg
you
to start paying attention to those moments when you’ve “gotten” what
your animal is saying to you! Stop yourself from assuming it’s a
coincidence that you had a sudden feeling to take your dog outside and
he or she really did have to go. Or the next time you take a second and
realize your cat has been telling you that litter box is not usable
right now and you see that, in fact, it is ready for a cleaning. Or, on
a more serious note, that time you had an inclination to check your pet
out at the vet and they caught something early on.
Acknowedgement
Acknowledging
these communications is also a sign of respect for your animal. Of
course, the next step is to follow up on what they are telling you. The
animals are ready and waiting so do not let them sit there, frustrated
and wishing we would just respond to them.Tell them, "I got it, Fluffy!"
Even if you are doubting. Just do it! I promise they will thank you.
