A recent move re-introduced access to the outdoors to my cat
TirNa.
TirNa was born outside where she lived for the first year of
her life. She has lived indoors ever since with some enclosed balcony access. However, she was not able to walk out the
door and put paws on the earth. Now that
this is a possibility, TirNa makes a bee-line for the door every time I come in
or out.
Feeling empathy for TirNa I decided that I would deal with
the stares of others and take my cat outside on a leash.
Understand that when talking to animals I am often seeing
images and feeling what they are feeling. What I write here is me using the
English language so that I can convey to the reader the information TirNa is
providing.
Anne: What does it feel like to be inside all year round?
TirNa: I feel like I settle into it. I am a very relaxed cat so it doesn’t bother
me.
Anne: So how does it now feel to be outside?
TirNa: The smells are the biggest thing. It smells like life
outside. The grass is especially
powerful. It’s delightful.
Anne: How do you think it will be to not have the outside
time as much in the colder months after having outside time?
TirNa: I feel like I would not live as long if I lived outside. I wouldn’t want to be outdoors
all the time and have to survive. I
enjoy my life.
Anne: Do you think all house cats feel this way?
TirNa: No. I’m a special kind of cat. I am supposed to be
with you so I am fine with it. Some have wanderlust and they may leave on their
own if need be.
Anne: Are you talking about cats who go missing?
TirNa: Sometimes it’s by choice, yes.
Note: This is something I have found working with some
missing animals. They do, at times, choose to leave for this very reason.
Anne: Thank you for your help teaching people about how it
feels to be a cat.
TirNa: It’s my job.
NOTE: Very true, TirNa is a master teacher who helps me and
often offers her teaching abilities to students during our classes!
